THE "CODGERS AND MISFITS" MATCH
The STEEL SAFARI has evolved into an extremely competitive match. We have had a lot of feedback from shooters over 50, whose eyes have changed for the worse, that they simply cannot locate or see the targets. For everyone else, we all have guns that we might like to try competitively, but they simply wouldn't be competitive against STEEL SAFARI Open-Division Rifles. Thus, we came up with this match at the request of JP Enterprises and others.
The "SAFARI SPECIAL" aka "CODGERS AND MISFITS" match is a version of the STEEL SAFARI with a few small changes to aid shootability for especially SENIOR and SUPER-SENIOR shooters (see DIVISION 1 below).
Targets will be FLAGGED to aid visibility.
We will also have night-vision ONLY side match available to shooters registered in the main match (see below).
Competitors will register in ONE DIVISION only, with the exception of the add-on DIV 7 Night Shoot. Every division will have its own prize table.
"SENIOR"
(AGE 55 or older as of Date of Match Check-in).
All normal Steel Safari RIFLE-DIVISION equipment rules apply.
SPECIAL SUBCLASS:
"SUPER SENIOR"
(AGE 65 or older as of Date of Match Check-in)
will be scored same but top 3 will be called out.
All DIVISION 1 competitors may have a Partner / Gun-bearer / Target-spotter / helper, if they want. This helper may not shoot but may aid
the shooter during the course.
DIVISION 1 shooters will all shoot standard STEEL SAFARI RIFLE rules.
"308 ONLY"
This division is for .308 WIN / 7.62 NATO rifles only.
All other normal Steel Safari rules apply.
"223 CARBINE"
223/556 ONLY in short-action AR-15 only. 3200fps limit.
UNLIMITED SHOTS PER TARGET.
This is the same as the 223 CARBINE division from Steel Safari.
"OPEN RIFLE"
This is the same as Steel Safari normal RIFLE / OPEN division.
"LIGHT RIFLE"
The rifle in complete configuration including an unloaded magazine and anything connected to it while on a field
course must weight 10.0 LBS or less.
All other Steel Safari RIFLE DIVISION rules apply.
"WEIRD AR-15 CALIBERS"
The rifle must be a small-frame AR-15 (ie, upper and lower must be fundamentally interoperable with a mil-spec/standard AR-15) chambered
in a cartridge OTHER THAN .223/556, and cannot simply be an Ackley-Improved version of 223/556.
Caliber must be .223 or larger (ie, no .204's)
Allowed cartridges include but are not
limited to: 224 Valkyrie, 22 Nosler, .25-45 Sharps, 6 ARC, 6-223, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, .300 Blackout
All other Steel Safari 223 CARBINE DIVISION rules apply.
Muzzle velocity shall not exceed 3200 fps.
"NIGHT-VISION FIELD EVENT"
Staff will open a number of the field stages for full-dark shooting for competitors who have appropriate night vision and/or thermal equipment.
Stage procedures will be substantially identical to STEEL SAFARI procedures.
No visible light will be allowed whatsoever once you leave the HQ, with the exception of light equivalent to one white or red, "dim"/low-output LED "task light".
This shoot will take place one night only. The night of check-in, we will have a "test-run" area set up for you to mess with your gear in the dark.
You may use any STEEL SAFARI legal RIFLE in 6mm or larger.
A limited number of slots will be available for this Add-on division.
Cost will be $100 per shooter; payment for side-match will be ON SITE -- do not mail it in.
There will be a separate prize table.
Please contact Zak or Jimmy via phone or email if you have questions.
"223 TRAINER"
Intended for bolt-action "trainers" in 233 Remington. Rifle must be a bolt-action. Besides 223 Remington, allowed cartridges also
include 224 Valkyrie, 22 Nosler, 223 Ackley, and other .22-caliber cartridges with less than 28.0 grains of powder.
All other Steel Safari RIFLE DIVISION rules apply.
Muzzle velocity shall not exceed 3200 fps.
Have an idea for another division? Let us know and we'll see what we can do.
We want at least 10 people in any given division.

MISSING TROPHIES–

OTHER NEWS
2023–
The 2023 schedule will be the same as 2022 for STEEL SAFARI and TEAM SAFARI. Jimmy and I are up in the air if we will repeat the SAFARI SPECIAL because attendance was down a bit this year and it’s during a very busy time of the year; however, we do have a lot of fun with it.
We should have the 2023 schedule posted for all matches by the first week in JAN. Like I said, the dates will be the same, adjusted +/- 1 day for the year to year dates/week change. In other words, “Matches same weeks.”
The only exception is that the announcement for 2023 SAC might be delayed because we are moving venue and need to finalize some stuff before we announce.
DAVE WHEELER–
As I announced at the awards meeting, we learned that DAVE WHEELER passed away last week. We do not have any additional information at this time. When we have any information about services, I will post it here to the list.
Dave and his wife Lorraine retired from LAPD and moved to Logan for their “first retirement”, and Dave established the Blue Steel Ranch as his shooting venue in the mid-late 1990’s. Dave was active in SOF, SWPL, the Second Chance matches, and other shooting during the 80’s and 90’s. The BSR was his own private shooting wonderland. He set up the field courses and held the first Steel Safari in 1998. Although the idea of the Keneyathlon predated the Steel Safari, the Keneyathlon fizzled out, while the Steel Safari is the longest running field-style LR match that I am aware of (25 years!!!). The Steel Safari was an “underground” match, in that you had to know someone who knew Dave to shoot it, in those first years. After the 2007 match, Dave announced that it was the “last Steel Safari” because it was too much for for one man to set up the match (true!). At that point, he handed the match over to us. In any case, Dave was a great guy and truly one of the old-school shooters and gunfighters. Rest in Peace, Dave.
